DR. OHIA, BEN-FRED
Abstract
The content of Ogba funeral songs articulates Ogba People’s world view about the dead and death. The different styles and literary aesthetic qualities in the song buttress the point of what the people think of death and the dead. This work attempts to explain the cultural heritage of Ogba
people, the content of their funeral songs and other related issues of reincarnation, life and death and the occasion of performance of funeral songs in Ogba. The philosophies and dynamics of the funeral songs of Ogba with time and occasion place them as an aspect of the African oral
poetry. The repetition in Ogba funeral songs as in African verse is intended to prolong a performance. This work also establishes the relationship among the song, chant, recitation and poetry and concludes that it is oral poetry in performance.
