Abstract
This study investigated the barriers to effective use of Biology laboratory for practical in Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku , Rivers State, Nigeria. Two research questions and hypotheses guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised of all biology education lecturers and students during the 2021/2022 academic session. Twenty five (25) Biology education lecturers and forty five (45) Biology students were used for the study. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. Self-design structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Independent t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that, to a high extent, provision and access to the provided requirements for biology laboratory were barriers to the effective use of Biology laboratory for practical. The findings also revealed that there was no significant difference in the mean rating of lecturers and students on the extent to which provision and access to the provided requirements for biology laboratory were barriers to the effective use of biology laboratory for practical. Based on the findings, it was concluded that Biology students are suffering from practical exposure and it was recommended among others that biology education administrators, lecturers and students should collaborate for fund raising through re-union to procure some of the basic requirements for Biology laboratory for the purpose of existing and future students’ practical.
