Abstract

The study determined how on-board diagnostics machine repairs affected Automobile department of Federal College Education Technical Omoku students’ academic performance and retention of automotive system repairs. The study’s quasi-experimental design consisted of a pre-test, post-test, and control group. The study was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. The population of the study comprised all two hundred level Automobile NCE and degree students of the institution. A random sample of 100 students was chosen. The tool used to gather data for the study was the Automobile Achievement Test (AAT). Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to address the research questions, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses. The study revealed that students who were taught using teaching aids, those who were taught automotive on-board diagnostics repairs using automotive animation performed better and retained the concept of On-Board diagnostic OBD Machines better. Based on the findings, it was recommended among other things, that teachers of automotive technology should adopt animation as a cutting-edge teaching tool in the automotive workshop and laboratory for better learning and retention of automotive course concepts both in theory and in practical examinations as this will help to lessen the difficulties associated with low student achievement in automotive technology.
